“When the Church Administration heard about the disaster here, aid was immediately extended. Such love and care were truly felt by the brethren in our district,” said Ecclesiastical District of Sorsogon assistant supervising minister Brother Thomas Tareno II.
Brother Tareno was referring to the Mt. Bulusan phreatic eruption before April 2025 ended. For the afflicted, the Church Administration of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church Of Christ) sent assistance via a Lingap sa Mamamayan (Care for Humanity) on May 18, 2025.
The said humanitarian event was held at the house of worship compound of the Local Congregation of Gulang-Gulang, as the village of its namesake was one of the most heavily affected areas in Sorsogon province. The ashfall disrupted daily life of nearby communities as water sources have been contaminated. Residents were advised to wear face masks, particularly the elderly, pregnant women, among others who are vulnerable to contracting respiratory sickness.
During the said event, over 200 care packages containing rice, canned goods, and hygiene supplies were distributed.
“This is a huge help for us who were affected,” Rose Panti said, one of the recipients. “Thank you, Brother Eduardo Manalo, for your love and concern for us.”
On behalf of the Gulang-gulang Congregation, resident minister Brother Elrane Nacion said, “We are grateful to the Church Administration for always remembering our welfare, especially during times of calamities like this. Their compassion is truly felt. Even in the midst of hardship and uncertainty, they ensure that we remain steadfast in the faith.” — With reports from Shiela Mae Mujar of INC News Section
